Before First Light–an Acrostic Golden Shovel
by Paulette Demers Turco

In honor of W. S. Merwin, “The Wings of Daylight” from Garden Time
(line 8) what we see that one time departs untouched

When form seems hidden by the dark, is what
Swirls faintly in the vacant space what we
Might have memorized? What do we see
Easing a night’s slow break to day? See that
Reflection, reinventing light. That one
Winged shadow will appear at dawn, one time,
If only fleetingly; night’s time departs
Needing to mingle with what is untouched.
