Villanelle
by Sharmagne Leland-St. John

As she lay there sleeping, dreaming by your side
Intrinsically you knew, she had forever on her mind
She gave her soul to one man, but he went away and died

On her face you trace the dried up tears she's cried
You're the one she thought she'd never ever find.
As she lay there sleeping, dreaming by your side

In her heart she knew, she'd never be your bride
But she never dreamt a man like you, could ever be unkind
She gave her love to you, but you sold your soul and lied

You pretended you could love her, the past your only guide
Yet wondered, "How can you love at first sight, when love is really blind?"
As she lay there sleeping, dreaming by your side

She wanted to forget him, you know she really tried
The nights she spent with you, cast his memory far behind
As she lay there sleeping, dreaming by your side
She gave her soul to two men, now to her they both have died
