You Were My Sunshine
by Candace Turner

When younger I worshipped the Sun
 blithely dismissing the ominous clouds
 drifting over his scorching face

My future a bright, burning ball of heat
I longed for his radiant fingertips to kindle my flame

But fire and heat are as short-lived as youth
Life's tears easily extinguish their fiery passions

And in their wake
 all that remains
a shadowy, shimmering trail of smoke and ash
