Blackbird on a Barbed-wire Fence
by Neil Leadbeater

There are 13 ways of looking at him.
From the side, the air, the ground,
obliquely, full on…
Stevens can give you the detail—
his beak full of bird chatter
opening and closing
but now you should tune in to Blacher—
his sound world from the gramophone
to hear how a blackbird
on a barbed-wire fence
can pierce you with his song.
