Autumn Quest
After a painting by Joann Roberts
by Melanie Claire Blinn Eulberg

He
travels
the silver
stream in pursuit
of fleeting shadows.
Mind-melding, he seeks dark
caverns where he too would hide,
resting, weightless, sheltered by depth
as heady currents sweep overhead
Autumn’s bounty of fallen gilded coins.
Finally, the perfect haven beckons
and he drops the fly in so lightly
that there is scarcely a ripple.
Yet the whisper finds its way,
luring upward a bold
rainbow trout from its
reverie to
the dream of
an old
man.
