There was a river…
by Sharmagne Leland-St. John

There was a river on the edge of town
Her waters ran deep and fast
No longer green, but a murky brown

No one swam for fear they might drown
Many a child had in the past
There was a river on the edge of town

The sedge on her bed just pulled them down
No one could recall who was the last
No longer green, but a murky brown

Then came a swimmer of great renown
He swore to break the spell that was cast
There was a river on the edge of town

On his forehead this swimmer wore a frown
The water was icy, the river was vast
No longer green, but a murky brown

Sadly he told the people of the town
He could not break the spell, alas
No longer green, but a murky brown
There was a river on the edge of town
