Barrier Island
by Sharmagne Leland-St. John
After the acrylic painting by Paulette Demers Turco
Whose palette did you use
to paint the subtle pinks and blues
the pallid greys of sunset skies
tinted by the waters
of the Merrimack
as she twists and turns
then veers right
toward the open sea
Purple sands at high tide
glisten from tiny crystals
of pyrope garnet
washed upon the shore
Piping Plovers nest
safe inside wild plum shrubs
that dot the banks
along expanses
of the Great Salt Marsh
The brackish waters
seek to escape
the wetlands
to mingle with
the emerald sea.
