and then she heard the cicadas sing     when
years of sleep long-honored ended     and
time arose to celebrate the coupling dance–
shrill voices multiplied
clung onto bark
abandoned shells     when
silent vigil conquered death

and then she heard the cicadas sing
aware of muses in the trees
