Four Wild Horses
by Wayne Lee
They amble out of the palm grove
that was blackened in last week’s fire
and onto the wide stretch of sand,
four wild horses in search of food.
Ignoring the tourists who point fingers
and spring to their feet to take pictures
with their phones, the two old mares
and their foals walk across beach towels
and snuffle purses and backpacks
for anything of sustenance.
Finding nothing of interest, they retreat
into the scorched forest, where already
new fronds sprout green on fan palms
and new shoots of grass reach like bright
spears from the shroud of ash toward
the mothering sky.
