One Wave at a Time
by Wayne Lee
Thank you for these waves
washing in off the wide Pacific,
crashing at my feet.
Thank you for the sun
warming the sand, the wind
lifting salt spray like a benediction,
the geese veeing their way south
and the humpback whales breaching
on the gray-blue horizon.
There are no other words to use
than thank you, for every thought
that crosses the meridian
of my mind is of gratitude,
every wave that arrives is a form
of praise, every instant we are here
a gift we receive with grace.
So thank you sun, thank you sand
and sea and sky, thank you life
that washes in one wave
at a time, returns to the deep,
then washes in again.
