ABOUT THE BOOK:

Ellaraine Lockie’s new collection takes a light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek look at every-
one’s favorite subject. With humor, wisdom and linguistic dexterity, the poet meets lucky
readers where they live. From her daughter’s first self-conscious, sexual inklings which
make her mother muse, I’ll never get through adolescence without rebelling, to the
simplicity of farm life in Montana, where everyone knew the livestock were making
babies even if no body-part words were used to describe what they were doing, to the
sexual energies of a Small Town Saturday Night, Lockie’s little book looms large in pure
poetic enjoyment.

ADVANCE PRAISE:

“These lively poems demonstrate why humor is cognate to humor and humility. From a
woman going nude outside a Tahoe resort to bring back her runaway dog, to a high-
schooler discovering that “twat” is not the past tense of “twit,” Lockie’s poetic tall tales
strip off our ill-fitting garments of shame and pretension, turning the embarrassments of
embodied life into a joke that brings us together.”
—Jendi Reiter is author of An Incomplete List of My Wishes: Stories (Sunshot Press) and
editor of WinningWriters.com

“Sarcasm, humor, and honesty mark these indelible poems by Ellaraine Lockie. Whether
being mistaken for a street walking hooker, encountering her first vibrator as a young
teen, or discovering condoms in her own teenage daughter’s jewelry box, this poet’s
never-flinching sensibilities are as revelatory as the day she saved her dog and exposed
herself unintentionally.”
—Gary Metras is author of White Storm and Poet Laureate of Easthampton, Massa-
chusetts.

“Ellaraine Lockie’s latest poetry collection, Sex and Other Slapsticks, is a journey of
discovery and rediscovery. It is a production of every-day drama of the ordinary made
extraordinary, interlaced with wry humor. This is an itinerary of geographies of body and
place with many surprising twists and turns. Lockie is superb at her craft. She weaves in
subtle commentary that never intrudes on her wonderfully sculpted gems.”
—Harris Gardner is Poetry Editor, Ibbetson Street.

FROM THE BOOK:

Role Reversal

by Ellaraine Lockie

We carpooled with the most popular
boy in the fifth grade
My turn to drive to drama try-outs

My ten-year old
daughter said
ahead of time
not to make
my zebra
bracelet talk

To wear a bra
Underpants too
Don’t do Tai Chi
in the parking lot
while I wait
No McGuire Sisters’
songs in the car

And don’t bring
up the buttons
I collect
for my
gravestone

The list grows with each grade
I’ll never get through adolescence
without rebelling
