This Too Shall Pass
by Julianne Carlile

Standing in flowers
your fragile legs and
antennae,
how long is your time?
What do you think of life?
What do you think of us?
Your colors are beautiful—
earthy, rich and warm.
I've always wanted to go
to where ever it is you all go,
where you fall out of the sky
like big rain clouds
suddenly appearing
surrounding people
like dainty magic friends
(I saw it in a movie once).
You are too fragile for life,
too fragile even for the painting
you are in.
You are a miracle of God
lifting us up and telling us:
Hang in there,
this too shall pass.
