First Night
by Karen Loeb

         Come over.
I'll grate potatoes
chop onions
line up eggs, salt and flour
heat the pan with a
thin layer of oil.
If you arrive within the hour
you can help drop batter
into the pan, then listen
         to those latkes sizzle.
I know it's last minute
but the first crunchy bite
will be worth it.
         Hurry over.
We'll say the prayer, light
the first candle.
Hanukkah will be here
         by sunset!
