Memories of the River

After the painting Walk in Beauty by Ann Huston

The revered elder walked
in silence along the shore,
memories drifting to the time
she and her beloved mother
washed the family cooking pots
when she and her father
speared the swimming salmon
and she and brothers and sisters
gamboled on sunny afternoons
long before what outsiders
called progress, spoiling
the once-clear waters yet
never erasing her thoughts
