Passages
by Vaughn Neeld

Within the villa's secret room,
dozens of fragrant miniature roses

dangle in abundant yellow clusters
from the wire cage that
surrounds the patio's earthen tiles.
Within the shade of the rose umbrella,
a young girl reclines her head on a silk-lined pillow.
Within the shaded light of her golden nest,
she dreams long dreams,
travels blushing paths that lead
to a plethora of possible futures.

Inside the kitchen, a busy woman
kneads dough while dreaming her own
jealous dreams of when her need was
quick and strong, knowing that it is rare
for a young girl's dreams to come true.
