Walk in Beauty
     hozho naasha
by Sharmagne Leland-St.John
after the pastel by Ann Huston

From the misty grey
and dark world
the first world

You were brought into creation
by a male and a female—
Holy Beings

Then you were born
into the blue world
as a Spirit Being

Nine moons passed
you entered
the third world
the yellow world
the world of sun
and silver singing rivers

After twelve moons you became
the woman who grew from the child
the woman of the raven tresses

You walk with beauty before you
You walk with beauty behind you

You wrap your shawl around you
through the changing seasons

Your corn-pollen footsteps
run to the edge of thunder
then fall afraid

You are Dineh

You are searching for something
you will never find

You walk with beauty before you
You walk with beauty behind you
