Camouflaged Stillness
by Paulette Demers Turco
–in response to Winter Sun by Sharmagne Leland-St. John

The lightest powdering of arctic white,
untouched by wing or paw,
blankets frozen prairie scruff and straw
along the stillest stream.
While dusk is hours away, the sun seems slight.
Two lone homes reflect
its muffled rays. But no one can affect
the nimbostratus steam
charging past the Rockies’ peaks. No scheme
can halt this tidal wave
in air now breaking just below the grave
beleaguered sun. This night,
winds will howl and miles of snow will throw
all in its undertow.
