Season of Joy
A Golden Shovel Poem
by Michael Escoubas

“Bone-Pale, the recent snow fastens like fur to the river.”
from Early December in Croton-on-Hudson, by Louise Glück

A welcoming bone-pale
sky, (the
night-sky of blue and cotton) and winter branches recent
with crystal-crusted snow
evoke a seasonal presence that fastens
itself to unfettered hearts like
the sight of four-legged figures in antlers and fur,
flying in air, and a rouged-face man calling to
his Rudolph-led cohort … on and on to the
task of bringing joy, even to those alienated by life's widest river.
