Autumn Coda
by Vaughn Neeld
A dusting of fresh snow
lies atop the naked arms
of a twisted elm leaning over
the bank of a barely trickling stream.
Clinging to the elm, a bedraggled tangle
of kudzu looks like a tutu embroidered
with sparkling white crystals.
Together–the elm and the kudzu–
dance a wild ballet to the tune of a wind
not yet gale-force. Fallen leaves–
yellow, orange, lime-green–
leap, twist, and circle the scene.
My imagination supplies the libretto.
