Facing the Shade
by erin-cilberto

kodak flickers
of years before,
when you stood at my door
and smiled, a picture
that never quite developed
except for the background
which remains the same
only there are new faces
and smiles, and the flash
works this time
and the sun is in the right place---
what i remember best is what
i see in the lens now;
yesterday is out of focus
and each morning
i wake up bordered in a dream of you
that has only a negative---
and nothing in between.
