Because
by Isis Runnels

Because of my eyesight
you were a shadow darker than night.
If memory serves me,
I froze,
peering,
squinting,
watching your progressive movement.
Irrational thoughts of nighttime fears
left me embarrassed.
When I realized what or whom I was seeing,
unsure,
I was relieved.
When you stepped into my line of vision
it was unblushing
that night;
the way I looked at you suddenly aware.
I held my hands behind my back.
My discomfort apparent
I tried my wit
and hoped you'd chance upon a smile.
I approached you against my will- I swear
Your fingers on my cheek meant to pacify,
my skin hungry,
swallowed them whole
You weren't surprised though, nor did you surrender
the moonlight in your hair.
I couldn't keep my eyes away …
the wind whispering in the trees,
the leaves rustling.
We didn't make a sound,
we were fluid.
Am I wrong?
I miss our dance
