Back to Basics
by Sandra Ervin Adams

Knowing his love of Brazilian Jazz
she takes his hand when he offers.
They lock eyes in laughter,
Bossa Nova all evening.
Despite different backgrounds,
they desire to be together.
Knowing her love of wood
he carves miniature chairs.
When her eyes light up in surprise
his smile lasts for hours.

Long ago, her ancestor,
a fair-skinned lass in tartan skirts
turns and twirls.
His ancestor,
an ebony-skinned islander,
carves wooden bowls.
