I Wrote Your Name
by John Polelle

I wrote your name in wet beach sand
and the seventh wave erased it.
Then in chalk upon the garden wall
but heaven wept, washed it away.

Not even your name chooses to remain.
It joins your smile, your soft touch.
As you yourself they disappear,
lost in the grey mist of what was.

So I write with pen on paper
over and over across the page,
then misplace that lined yellow sheet.
Your name is gone forever.
