Malinalli
Poems by Ma. Luisa Govela

XI

Con grana me tiño los dientes.
Masco tzictli para limpiarlos
y perfumar mi aliento.

A menta y hierbabuena saben mis labios.

XI

I stain my teeth with cochineal.
Chew tzictli to clean them
and perfume my breath.

My lips taste of mint and spearmint.
I loosen my hair over my shoulders
a perfumed cascade of brilliant maroon,
parted in the middle, one half falling free
the rest tucked behind my ear,
floating softly down my back.
I brush it one hundred times each morning.
Some days of the month
I twine my two thick braids in their red ribbons
wear necklaces of amber,
moonstone,
lapis lazuli, malaquite
turquoise, tiger's eye, goldstone
against the evil eye,
translucent opal, timid amethyst
I rub my cheeks with axin
They shine clear, bronzed.
The fragrance of mandrake filters my body.
My eyes take on the color of desire.

XII

XII

My masters ask me to bathe
and shine like a princess.
My embroidered dress the most beautiful
my petticoats, a perfect fit.
I put color on my cheeks and lips,
comb my long mane.
I adorn my head with jasmine.

I'm a gift for bearded gods.

XIII

Una noble y virginal doncella
así me presentan ante los dioses.
Esta es una princesa, hija de caciques,
una joven virgen, hija de nobles,
así me presentan.
Eso dicen mis amos
a los dioses centauros.
En realidad, ustedes ya lo saben,
no represento la edad que tengo.
Soy una anciana de dieciséis años.
Sabia desde la infancia
en asuntos del comercio amoroso.
Guardo bien mi secreto.
Hoy mi papel es diferente:
una princesa india, dulce y virginal.

XIII

A doncella, noble and virgin
is how they present me to the gods.
This is a princess, daughter of chiefs,
a young virgin, daughter of nobles,
so they present me.
This is what my masters say
to the centaur gods.
In reality, as you already know,
I don't look the age I am.
I'm an anciana of sixteen years.
Wise since childhood
in affairs of amorous commerce.
I keep my secret well hidden.
Today my role is different:
an indigenous princess, sweet and virginal.

XIV

XIV

There's no place for me
in this full, overflowing world,
not even in the most miserable and austere corner.
Then he broached the question that would change my life:
Do one of these speak Náhuatl?
Oh my god,
I said to Jeronimo de Aguilar in Mayan,
I speak Náhuatl. Tell him.

Don Hernando looked at me with interest,
his eyes shone above his great nose:
Who is this that comes out of the jungle and can speak
languages? A wild, multi-lingual savage?

He guffawed and said:
So you also speak Náhuatl?
And he took me for himself.

XV

XV

The violence of desire falls on my breasts
blind, ravenous,
I won't drink potions of azahares.
A delight to be love sick.
I'll enjoy the fruit of the cacao to increase pleasure.
It's not my desire to stifle this urge.
My vineyards are shifting,
herds of run-a-way goats,
a gust of irrepressible yearning.
