Vacancy
by Annie Jenkin

Like a prism
filled with sunlight,
a living rainbow
streamed down the path,
showing sights, sounds
and scents anew.

I'm sure the sky
stole its hue from you,
the timbre of your voice
quickened my pulse
your arms felt like home—
more home than I had ever known.

As the wind turned
swallows felt the chill,
I turned to share
my heart with you
but you were not there.
