Still Here
by Susan Rocco-McKeel

Flush with first love’s plummy succulence
we traded privileged pieces,
my inner pulp exposed.
Your mendacious promises flowed hot through my veins,
I trusted.
Satiated with certainty
I pledged my future
you committed yours.
Exploring intimacy with a feral ferocity
our souls’ passionate embrace
I was slow to see you sidestep.
Cleaving a breach within me
a sacred betrayal
splintered with desperation,
tainted with despair.
Yet, I advanced.
You retreated.
I grasp the left-over slippery shards.
I stumble, come up empty
Shattered dispossession
beneath my feet stalls me but
I wait for you
to find us again.
