The best things
by Michael Escoubas

are the plainest things:
your touch
in the cool of the night
your breath
caressing my cheeks
holding you
when a bad dream scares you
sharing tangerine slices
and late coffee at your bedside
remembrances
of our children … how far
they have come
and our grandchildren
how we delight in them
how we pray for them
and want to live
long enough to see them grow

the sufferings … a few, to be sure,
but too few to mention
when we look at life
in the full stretch of time.

Yes, yes, and yes again,
the best things
are the plainest things,
now dressed in ribbons of gold.
