Having Served
by Paulette Demers Turco

He wants to buy the ring today.
For all these months, he’s saved his pay,
but since that day sound disappeared
in his second ear, he’s feared,
with his new fate, she'll change her mind.
Marry this GI? How kind
can he expect his love to be?
How many whispered words will she

say to him, unwittingly,
that he will never know. One plea
is that somehow he'll hear her sing
again. Should he still buy the ring,
set a romantic scene, a memoir
of love songs
                       without music?

                                               Damn war.
