Rhine River Romance
by Gay Williford

It was late June on the Rhine River
when our tour boat anchored
in a secluded, sheltered cove.
Evening saw us tourists on the open
upper deck enjoying sunset hues
and sipping local wines.
Below in the serene waters
a swan couple swam silently into view.
All aboard were enthralled
as a beautiful scene evolved
with this graceful, majestic pair.
Very attentive to each other
their snowy necks twisted together
in a tender caress of caring.
Soon they paddled on in the stillness
and, if you listened carefully,
it might be quite possible to hear
a memoir of love songs without music.
