January Shirt Sleeves
by Harding Stedler

We boys are about the lake
tonight in shirt sleeves.
Geese fill the sky with feathers
and squawk their way to slumber.
I feel the wind of wings
as they depart for safety.
Between puffs of smoke,
we talk about our day's work
and discuss next season's rice crop.
Soon, a flatboat pulls ashore,
and the day is done.
We speak of fishing
before the heat of summer.
On picnic tables,
we lie down and watch the moon.
Romantic nights often surface early
in a leap year.
