Softly, at first, as if it hardly meant it, the snow began to fall

They came down slowly from a blue grey sky
random flakes on sidewalks and tree limbs
some evaporating in an instant,
a little dream that faded.
Others hovered together,
joined to make a cluster, and
the clusters make uneven white squares
until all the blankets
covered the horizon
near and far
stretched white and wide.
Soon you could step outside and
hear each flake hit the ground
a muffled greeting
until there was
no sound at all
only
white
