Views at Fish Creek, Glacier NP
by Karla Linn Merrifield

In land of no foothills
cling to the valley
or climb.

If looking for golden eagles,
find robins, find crows.

Fewer, smaller glaciers,
more avalanches?
Earth warms.

Avoid bear jams on roadways
or you'll be bear jam.

Bear grass blooms
full in paw-sized orbs,
white as bear-scared skin.

Going-to-the-Sun Road
only leads to ice and snow.

Thunder of mule deer hooves,
racing, wild—
she came so near.

The active ingredient
in spruce trees
is lichen.
