Little Mouse Enticed
by Carole Mertz

Dried sweet pea seeds are in the packets, but little mouse doesn’t know this. He twitches his nose, enjoying the scent, then scampers behind the clay pot. When will Jake come and take up his trowel? Wait! Winter’s not yet spent—it needs but two more months, and mouse must wait. He’ll spend his time in the shed, meanwhile, disappearing when the lady of the house approaches searching for her gardening gloves or dustpan and brush. Mouse hopes for invisibility. Whiskers shaking, his breath comes quickly. Alone now, he sniffs again the seed packets and wonders if the contents might be edible.
