Sea of Sighs
by Candace Turner

Two women sat by the river
at the edge of town
Losing track
of time
One black hand clasps one white
Relieved they have each other

They catch and release shared fears
Breathe winds of love into the ether
Remembering simpler days
Days full of endless hopes and desire
War was never part of their dream

Now they have only each other
to console the empty spaces
the empty chair

Rain whispering … your journey’s
just begun.
A truth they
don’t want to believe
Mothers are the casualty
never acknowledged

All they can do
is pray and hold on
There will be heavy gray days

Nights when darkness framed nightmares
threaten to overcome hope

Hope for the day
they will come home

The best day of the year
