Sweet Pea
by Mary Audrey Kneipp

Little mouse with unbrushed coat of
brown and gray, I’d say your house
is not a mansion and yet your life,
if not sublime, is never really boring.
Explore you must and so you do,
every cranny and nook, and look!
Here’s something new, flat shiny things
(once you get your courage up)
to sniff and, maybe, taste!

Next summer out in the yard, a trellis of
sweet peas, lavender, pink, deep purple
and rose, will fill my heart with beauty
and peace, and I will remember you, wee
mouse, and wish for you a satisfied belly
and, most of all, a cat-free house.
