Emissary of Light
by Mary Jo Balistreri

Tiniest mandarin
a sun in my palm
without seed or netting
no strings attached
nothing but segment
after sweet segment
of spiraled radiance

Holding you
i forget for a brief time
the world spinning cold
the indigo mood
of lost jobs
of violence
in the streets

Stopping in an aisle
of the huge store,
i peel your smooth
round rind and breathe
in the fragrant citrus
of your scent
Something stirs within

and i take a bite
savor each curved piece
and eat another
while shopping, wonder
when overwhelm changed
to not so bad …
Are you smiling
