Pianissimo
an Acrostic Golden Shovel poem
by Paulette Demers Turco

If you can’t be free, be a mystery.
from “Canary” from Grace Notes, 1989, by Rita Dove

Resonance these days–if
I hum soft tunes to show you
Throbs unnervingly. I can’t
Attain crescendos. I’ll be
Dreaming trills to set me free
Of my mind's weight. I’ll be
Vibrant in song–high C and A
Ever with hope, yet mystery.
