Ice Skating in January
by Gay Williford

A late afternoon sun
splatters a gray-blue sky
with soft peach highlights.
A numbing chill is felt
as nature is held still in the cold.
Tall, skeletal trees
frame a frozen lake,
where well-wrapped skaters
glide across the ice–
some to waltz, some to fall,
some to hover, some to shiver …
all displaying a love of this sport
whose frigid conditions must be accepted!
