The Madonna of the Goldfinch
by Gloria J. Viglione©

Composure
is her strength

the way she tends
to matters on the inside, how

she presents him
to the daylight,

the songbird, docile
in his tiny clutch

his mouth sounding the language
of the owl and the finch

his gaze dreaming the path
the butterfly takes in winter.

The Madonna
cradles a secret

while the infant holds firmly
to her veil

inviting peek-a-boo
with the whole world.
