A Mind of Winter

To understand spring,
First one must have
a mind of winter–
thoughts tilted away
from the sun, surviving
with less light,
less heat, focused on
lessons of dormant days
and soul hibernation.
One must learn
to bundle the heart
with extra layers of stillness
for the long darkness,
the bare-branch cold.
It is winter that teaches
our deepest roots
to prepare for
spring's newborn buds.
