Resolution, 2026
by Paulette Demers Turco

This New Year’s night, the candles are still lit
in every window, all are feeling fit–
despite our being older, we are spry.
We decide the outdoors calls, so pry
ourselves from deep, soft seats. We don’t just knit.

We don our warmest coats, plaid scarves, and mitts–
knowing each sunset show’s unique, commit
to see the first. Enroute, we eye the sky
this New Year’s night.

The orb sinks low. Marsh grasses fade a bit,
the beach a mile away, due east. Waves hit
the Reservation shore, resound. We fly
across the walkway, watch the waves break high,
turn west to pink lace-ribboned sky–twilit,
this New Year’s night.
