Cardinal on Snowy Branches by Helen ONeal

Study in Scarlet
by Michael Escoubas

I’ve always had
my favorite place
a space of rest
that satisfies
my tired soul.

Overnight
snow amassed
on barren branches
and lay in fluffs
and whitened puffs.

I fixed my glance
upon the flame
so red
the branch
began to glow.

I barely moved, careful
not to alarm
a single feather
or onyx pouch
or orange beak.

Standing still
I savored warmth
a taste of grace
that filled a vacant space
found, in my soul’s favorite place.
