If I Knew
by Sharmagne Leland-St. John

If I knew why the wild bird flew
I'll tell you what I would do
I'd sing a song to you
Verses full of rhyme
But I am chained to time
If I knew why the caged bird sings
I would not try to clip your wings
Nor keep you close to earth
For from the moment of your birth
You were wont to fly
With ravens and eagles
And that is why
We are so different
You and I
Your spirit free
To flow to drift to fly
While I have found
There are silken threads
That tie me to the ground
I am chained to time
While you are free to be
To fly
Between the sea
And sky
