ABOUT THE BOOK:

A writer of no less stature than Willa Cather has written, “Where there is great love there are always miracles.” Cather’s words offer an ideal segue into E.J. Rode’s latest collection, No Matter How It Ends. Rode has that rare quality of inviting readers into her world. Her poems reveal the sacred within the commonplace, that through the medium of poetry, great love is within one’s grasp. There is no reason not to assign visions and wonders to her work.

ADVANCE PRAISE:

Reader beware. This book of poetry will hold you captive. E.J. Rode dares to write that “Love is always a miracle–no matter how it ends.” She speaks of unbearable loss. “Growing old was something–we’d do together. “Didn’t you know–that you were the story–I always wanted to hear?” E.J. Rode is about “Truth at all costs. Expect nothing else from this poet. No Matter How It Ends is a masterpiece by a highly skilled poet who dares to live life on her own terms.
–Marcel Aimé Duclos, Author of Unavoidable … evade dying at your peril

We’re fortunate that Meadowlark Press has invited poet E.J. Rode to share her powerful, private conversations with us in this collection, No Matter How It Ends. It’s quite an undertaking, but E.J. has followed her own advice: “Write the poems you fear no one else will like.” Thanks to E.J.’s masterful poetry, I’m less judgmental, think more deeply, and better understand our world and myself.
–Jim Potter, author of Deputy Jennings Meets the Amish

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Poet E.J. Rode has spent most of her life choosing the roads less traveled. She finds joy, sorrow, and frequently, wisdom in almost everyone she meets. Her work resonates because it is reflective of how much we are alike, even when we differ. Although she has tried her hand at many forms of writing, from fiction and newspaper columns to essays, she always returns to poetry, her first love.

E.J.’s poetry has appeared in Third Wednesday, The Josephine Quarterly, And/Both Magazine, Zephyr Press and Colorado Living.

FROM THE BOOK:

August Morning

by E.J. Rode

I heard the geese this morning,
the wild ones
winging overhead.
Their voices woke me
where I lay
warm and lazy on my bed.
And I thought
it’s only August
surely summer is not past.
The only answer was their echo
moving south
fading fast.

I have cunning devices
man-made ways
to portion out my life
into
minutes
hours
days.
Theirs is wisdom
born of being
exactly as they’re made.
That wisdom lends them motion
while I in stillness
wonder
why I stay.
