Don't Touch That Crank
by Vaughn Neeld
Riding in the car during the 1950s.
Summer heat beating down
like tympanies and tubas,
the car with no AC.
All windows must
be rolled up.
The seat, slimy with sweat,
sticks to our legs,
but she insists,
No Windows Down!
We yearn for the rush
of fresh air, for relief
from the blasting heat,
but we all swelter because
her hair must not be mussed.
