ABOUT THE BOOK:

Deborah Kolodji’s book Vital Signs chronicles the journey of her cancer diagnosis and treatment in finely written haiku verse where the theme and the construct balance each other masterfully. Haiku is known to manifest elements of the natural world and Kolodji skillfully weaves medical science with that natural kigo inside the tensile strength of haiku’s three lines to produce a deft and intimate emotional resonance. It’s heartbreaking. It’s beautiful. And at times, funny!

ADVANCE PRAISE:

Kolodji dedicates the book to the women of her support group and the doctors, nurses and staff of USC Norris Cancer Hospital. Praise from these, her first readers, was a stunning moment of clarity, recognition and a visceral appreciation of distilled tragedy and hope.
–Bruce H. Feingold, VP of the Haiku Poets of Northern California writes, “Kolodji shares her arduous journey through cancer with honesty, courage, gritty humor and grace … her vivid images and imaginative leaps demonstrate a stunning mastery of the contemporary haiku form.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Deborah P Kolodji is the longtime moderator of the Southern California Haiku Study Group, the California Regional Coordinator for the Haiku Society of America and former president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association. A native of California, she has a degree in mathematics from the University of Southern California. Her first full-length book of haiku and senryu, highway of sleeping towns, from Shabda Press, was awarded a Touchstone Distinguished Book Award from the Haiku Foundation. Her chapbook, tug of a black hole from Title IX Press, won 2nd Place in the Elgin Awards from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association. Kolodji has also recently collaborated with Tokyo tanka poet Mariko Kitakubo in a relatively new form of haiku poetry called Tan-Ku, a duet in sets, collected in their book Distance, also from Shabda Press.

FROM THE BOOK:

Vital Signs

by Deborah Koloji

the blush of dawn
through a hospital window
vital signs

biopsy moon
the hoot owl haunts me
all night long

wildflowers in bloom
when your children
take care of you
