Trolls Bowl in Competition Over Mountain Village
by Lenora Rain-Lee Good
Thunder ricochets down the canyon walls, cups rattle in the cupboard.
Kodo drumming by Nature, calls my thoughts to silence.
Lake dances with reverberations, reminds me of Jurassic Park.
Dog shakes under the bed, I sit zazen by the bed, dog whines, I become empty.
Mother yells down the halls of memory to turn my radio down, it’s too loud!
Outside, rain batters my world, deer rest under the trees.
Wind prunes the trees of small dead branches with wild abandon.
Fox kits watch from under the hedge.
Cloud-induced dusk dissipates, sun shines upon the world.
Billy rides his bike, newspapers in plastic, I hear his haruga horn, bring in the news.
Wolf howls in the mountains, coyote skulks to the shore.
Ducks watch from the water, oblivious to the circling eagle.
Dog slinks into my lap, still shaking, still whining, but safe.
Mother remains quiet, the halls of memory sleep.
The Trolls have moved to another canyon, another alley.
The evening sun turned crimson.
