Wildfire!
by Gay Williford
The day passed in smokey mists–
wildfires were raging in nearby forests
filling the air with ash and acridity.
Strong winds impelled the fire’s progress,
the swoosh, crackle and howls audible
miles from the encroaching burn line.
Evacuation loomed for us reluctant residents.
My family dampened down all we could,
packed the car and left in late afternoon.
On the busy road away from our homes
the evening sun turned crimson as though
the fire had brush-stroked the wide sky,
and we drove away, our hopes
for a reprieve, a “stay of destruction”
as strong as the flames that chased us.
