Albuquerque Sky
by Jimita de los Santos

Lightning crashes in the Albuquerque sky
each drop a silver arrow
piercing the dust
and dissolving the hills

within seconds
the current rages
canons boom louder and nearer
and shock waves slam into the ground

with my eyes closed
I feel the lightning
before the flash and the reverberation
echoing through space
a glimpse of divine power
illuminating the sundered sky

but the storm blows away in the wind
fading to weak flashes behind the mountain
as the flood cascades down the arroyo
washing away my pain
