Before
by L.B. Williams

Three days before you started to grow into five cells
my father died….he lay in a coffin in Queens buried
in a large cemetery next to his mother and father
great grandfather Simon who came up and started up the
Star Dry Goods Bazaar store…but that was a long time ago
it was hard to find his grave in this massive place
it was a right turn at Levy’s then go down the path take a
left at Leventhal’s and a sharp right at Levine’s there
you would see them all… I was hoping you would come
and soothe the absence of all this dying…this other country
where they go my father a thin man grown fat from the
tumor in his brain puffed out and swollen he went and from
that other place he brought you to me all fresh like pond water
